The Cycle of Life

The world as we know it today is born of Fire, Earth, Water, and Air. They are universal forces, essential to life. Like primordial energetic threads, these four elements weave themselves together to create all of life.

While the four elements co-exist throughout nature, they can also be understood as a cycle that moves progressively from one element to the next.

The cycle of life begins with a spark, full of potential. That spark grows into a flame as its Fire builds in strength and magnitude. Channeled and focused toward form, it transitions into matter, the realm of Earth where things play out in physical form.

Water falls and gradually permeates the earth, becoming more abundant until it flows into the immense oceans. Some of the water evaporates, rising into the more subtle domains of Air.

Spiritual Meaning of the Elements

This elemental cycle can be observed in the physical world around us. It also represents a progression through universal spiritual principles that we naturally encounter in our lives:

  • Fire ignites and propels us forward, giving us our creative drive. It represents our our unique spirit, inspirations, creativity, passion, all that drives us.
  • Earth hosts our physical form—our matter-based bodies are bound to and follow the principles of the Earth.
  • Water brings renewal, flowing through us like the blood that brings life to our organs. It represents our emotions which can flow freely in love, or get blocked or polluted.
  • Air fills our lungs with the breath of life, moving through us in the form of our thoughts, beliefs, and understanding.

Like an upward spiral, we move through the cycle of the elements again and again, learning, growing, and expanding our consciousness.
